1.1 Background of the Study
Rural tourism is often considered a key driver for economic growth in rural areas, providing both employment and income for local communities while promoting cultural heritage and environmental conservation. Kanam Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State is home to diverse natural landscapes, cultural practices, and historical sites that could attract tourism. However, rural tourism in the area remains underdeveloped, primarily due to limited visibility and marketing of its tourism potential. Photography, as a tool for visual storytelling, plays a pivotal role in showcasing the beauty of the landscape, the richness of local culture, and the unique experiences that Kanam has to offer. This study seeks to explore the role of photography in promoting the rural tourism potential of Kanam LGA, assessing its effectiveness in attracting tourists and highlighting the importance of local cultural preservation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the presence of unique tourist attractions in Kanam LGA, such as scenic mountains, cultural festivals, and indigenous art, rural tourism in the area remains relatively unknown to broader audiences. The lack of effective marketing strategies and documentation of the area's tourism potential limits its growth. Photography, with its ability to capture the essence of a place, can serve as a compelling tool to showcase Kanam's rural tourism potential. However, its use in promoting tourism has not been sufficiently explored in this context. This study aims to investigate how photography can be utilized to raise awareness and boost the tourism potential of Kanam LGA.

This study is significant because it highlights the potential of photography as a cost-effective marketing tool for promoting rural tourism. By documenting the natural beauty, culture, and historical significance of Kanam LGA, photography can help increase its visibility, attract tourists, and contribute to the local economy. This research could inform tourism policy and strategy in rural areas of Plateau State.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of photography in promoting rural tourism specifically within Kanam LGA, Plateau State. It does not address other forms of tourism promotion or the broader challenges faced by the local tourism industry.
